The term European hangover is often used to indicate that a team's poor league play stems from an intense match on the continent. It just seems that football teams have a noticeably harder time domestically when playing after a euro-cup tie. Today's premiership match felt like a case of european hangover for Manchester United even though their noteworthy European match will be played after this game (a champion's league face-off with Porto on Feb 25th). The Red Devil's draw against the league's cellar-dwellers was not a dull match. Though it was a dour affair for their fans. A stripped-down Leeds United side--barely a shadow of its self under David O'Leary's glory days--managed to limit the Manchester United attack to frustrating, long-range attempts at goal. Worse, when Van Nistlerooy and company did get the odd oppurtunity inside the goalmouth, their finishing errant enough to never force a significant save from Leeds' rookie keeper. Paul Scholes was Manchester United's exception on this day of stuttering offence. The invaluable midfielder pounced on a deflected cross and slipped it passed Leeds' goal line at 64 minutes. But then, just three minutes later, Leeds grabbed their equalizer on the break. Didier Domi's cross led to an unmarked header by Alan Smith and that's all she wrote. Leeds had never seriously threatened Tim Howard's goal all game. Yet, with one simple but well-executed play, the game was tied and it ended that way too. h3. Damn It was a disapointing result. There's really not much more to say beyond that. Oh, right. That is everything except for the not so insignificant fact that Chelsea fell to Arsenal today. That makes Arsenal 7 points clear of Manchester United as the intense fixture-lists of March and April loom near. It's not an insurmountable deficit, but two points squandered against the most maligned team in the league is a bitter result indeed.
