NFL
Like every league's all-star selection process, picking players for the NFL's Pro Bowl game boils down to a popularity contest. Every year, there are always a few curious snubs and some sentimental holdovers in the lineup which every fan under the sun can gripe and obsess about.
My particular grievence with this season's list is not who's on the list, but rather how embarrassingly long it took coaches, players and fans to finally grant Steve McNair the Pro Bowl berth he has deserved for years.
h3. Collective Blindness?
The popular excuse around the league for perennially overlooking the Tennesse quarterback has been that McNair plays in a small market that lacks major media exposure. For the large part, I can excuse this argument when used as a reason for un-hyped players like Mike Rucker or Matt Hasselbeck being left out of Pro Bowl recognition. Yet, can you believe that this year's Pro Bowl will be Steve McNair's first trip to Honolulu as a starter?
Steve McNair has put up the numbers, gone to the Superbowl, carried his team on his back and done all this consistenly for years. But, are the blindspots created by the hype machine so strong that not enough people simply noticed this guy until just now?
This guy is a Hall of Famer even if his career were to end right now. The fact it took him nine years to get the credit he deserves from fans, players and coaches should smear egg over alot of faces when he gets into Canton.
