It’s hard to pay attention to 9/11 conspiracy theorists. The actions of the Bushmen after the twin tower and pentagon bombings already fail the smell test for most people who have followed the machinations of the oval office since the terrorist acts. But Barrie Zwicker takes conspiracy theories to the next level. The journalist and documentary maker reveals to George Straight reporter Terry Glavin that he’s not only a whack job who believes that the entire events of leading up to 9/11 and after constitutes “a giant terror fraud” orchestrated by the the Bushmen, but Zwicker also contends that Noam Chomsky, the venerable American anarchist is in truth an apologist for the CIA:
Zwicker said readers should find the fifth chapter very exciting. Its title is “The Shame of Noam Chomsky and the Gatekeepers of the Left”. You can probably guess the general drift of its contents. Sneak preview: it turns out that Chomsky, the famous MIT linguist, is an apologist for the CIA, and, worse, “he is a member of the community of apologists for the official story” about 9/11, Zwicker said. “When I really started to research him, I was shocked.” For instance, Chomsky never questioned the assassinations of John K. Kennedy, his brother Robert, or American black Muslim leader Malcolm X. “There’s something very strange here,” Zwicker said.
Noam Chomsky participates in the further dissemination of CIA propaganda? Really? That’s like claiming Stephen Lewis goes to Africa for the sex tourism.
It would be easy to dismiss Zwicker’s sensational claims for the over-the-top drivel that it is. But then we’d be missing the real troubling aspect about gonzo anti-right wingers like Zwicker: their spurious claims compromise the voice of thoughtful and legitimate dissenters to the policies of the Bush government. There are much more immediate and more important issues to hold the US regime’s feet to the fire to such as the admitted outright lies used by the hawkish White House as the pretext to invasion of Iraq. Is it too much to ask for Bush haters to crucify him for the right reasons? There’s no need to go over the top when you already have a president and cabinet that everybody and their uncle has documented to be incompetent warmongers.
Glaven’s comparison of Zwicker to Michael Moore is apt. Both film-makers are egotistical blowhards who distort and manipulate their forums for self-promotion. They appeal to a spoon fed sensationalist fringe and end up doing more to hurt the left-wing than help it. Just like the Bush government, conspiracists like Barrie Zwicker doesn’t even pass the smell test.
So true. If Washington ever wants to make a diversion, all they need to do is hold a press conference where a guy in an army dress uniform with 20 medals and aviator glasses firmly denies rumors of Area 51's existance, and all the screwballs and newspapers make so much noise that the government can get some business done without anyone noticing. It seems like the most vocal or noticeable supporters of any institution do more harm than good. For example, I do believe that the real reason why church attendance has been dropping for years is because of the fundamentalist goofballs getting their panties in a twist over the purple Teletubby being gay, or D&D and Harry Potter recruiting kids into satanic cults. The actions of the loud and the lunatic cause people to shy away from whatever they're ranting about, on the off chance that it might be contagious.
