The CBC reports that Derek Zeisman, former Conservative candidate for the British Columbia Southern Interior riding, promises to resign if convicted of smuggling charges:
Speaking from his hospital bed, Zeisman has apologized to the people of his riding, his campaign team and the Conservative party, saying he betrayed their trust by failing to disclose that he’s “under investigation for six charges under the federal Customs Act.”Harper announced last week that Zeisman will not be allowed to sit as a Conservative unless he’s cleared of all charges.
Zeisman says he’s confident he will be when his case goes to court after the election. But he says if he is elected and then found guilty, he’ll resign.
“If I am elected by the good people of this riding on January 23rd, and I am not exonerated of those charges, if I am found guilty of those charges, then I will be quite ready and willing to step down and allow a byelection to be called.”
This must be the most novel and entertaining election pledge in history: I am not a crook… except, that is, unless I am, at which point you can have your vote back. Vote for me.
My hunch is that Zeisman’s potential constituents may just decide to remove any possibility of a byelection when they go to the polls on Monday.
I went to university with this sleaze nearly 20 years ago. Even then, it was widely discredited for lying his way into positions of responsibility with organizations from which he would invariably steal and then lie or even attempt to blackmail to cover up!
"Misappropriation of funds," "campaign irregularities"? Ha!! This is the classic Zeisman practice that goes back 20 years! Wierd? You said it. It's amazing he hasn't been jailed before this. But on he goes. Madly. In self-defeat.
Many who knew this individual as "friends" witnessed his petty criminal behaviour and psychotic episodes toward "self-aggrandizement", and wisely distanced ourselves from him. Now the major Canadian political parties have wisened to "Mr." Zeisman's ways, and are rightly doing the same. He is certainly not to be trusted in ANY role of responsibility.
Has there been any investigation into this individual's financial activities from his time as an employee with the Canadian foreign service in Algeria? That would be VERY prudent, given his emerging criminal record.
He is an inveterate criminal who should be brought to justice...lest he steal more from Canadian taxpayers or kill himself or others in his well publicized furies of tragically reckless behaviour.

Zeisman has dug his own shallow grave.
