The President's Commission for Implementation of U.S. Space Exploration Policy has begun soliciting public input regarding manned space flight to the Moon and Mars.
Let me suggest that any plan to land a man on Mars within our lifetime requires only two ingredients:
# The trip will be one-way. The engineering innovations required to launch the first mission to mars exist only because we've taken for granted our desire for our emissary to return to us. Send one man one-way and we will have our milestone within the decade.
# Thus, in keeping with the notion that America must endure courageous sacrifice in its leadership and emancipation of the entire world, the Astronaut should be a man of great notoriety and global significance. He needs to be a martyr of such stature that he will inspire the tireless effort necessary to send him off and yet leave us the happier for his greatly symoblic departure.
That's right, the President's Commision should be instructed to send the President himself on an express, one-way ticket to Mars with no return fare provided. The world would be a happier place and we would have our man on Mars. Make your voice heard and tell the President's Commision to Plant a Bush on Mars today!
