Honestly, I have no idea what to make of Spencer Tunick and his popular human art installations. Tunick photographs and films large masses of naked figures in public locations, garnering as much notoriety for his arrests as he does for his art.
It's certainly not for conservatism's sake that I find myself skeptical regarding his latest exploits. Rather, the whole phenomenon that's arisen around Tunick himself reduces the majority of his work to the status of novelty. Perhaps I am too unsophisticated to grasp the art world's latest monomania, but I also suspect that examples such as Spencer Tunick are the reason why a majority of people consider "Art" to be an inaccessible experience best left to the self-absorbed few.
A Spontaeneous Public Policy Decision: Arts funding should be as sparse as artwork is aloof and gimmicky ... oh wait, it already is. I guess now we know why.
