I'm nearly done deciding between speech to text programs to outfit my computer with. The point of the software is to enable you to dictate to your machine and execute other tasks, in a supposedly more efficient manner, through voice commands. Specifically, most speech to text programs offer the ability to use commands prefixed by a hot word to alert the machine to your order. For example: "Computer: format everything" would be useful and is analgous in syntax with "Saddam: delete WOD.txt."
I'll be honest: I'm installing this more for the sheer geeky appeal of imitating science fiction's time-honoured convention of speaking to one's equipment than I am setting up a highly anticipated and much needed tool for desktop productivity.
So, with my true intentions out of the way, my most pressing concern is simple:
What do I call my computer?
Star Trek is remarkably unimaginative in the constant usage of "Computer" to reference... well, a computer. Wouldn't it be much more fun to refer to the bucket of transistors as "HAL", "Cerebro" or even "Marvin"? If you're going to mutter something several times a day, it may as well be fun to pronounce.
I've gathered a few names I like so far, so if you could please help me out with your suggestions I would truly appreciate the input.
Possible Names:
- Bob - because he's The Guardian and he comes from the supercomputer.
- Jango - not because I'm fond of Mr. Fett, but rather because I just enjoying saying his name. I'm also fond of Shango.
- Jesús - pronounced "Hey-Zeus!" Possibly Jesús Jesús Jesús Jose Maria Jesús if used in full. Isn't Spanish wonderful?
- Kosh - the ominous Vorlon Ambassador, with the coolest arsenal of enigmatic quotes ever.
- Marvin - as in the Paranoid Android from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
- Mini-Me - "you complete me."
- Optimus - as in Prime and leader of the Autobots.
- Phong - cooler than Yoda and good at Pong.
- Teletran - the Autobots' really powerful main computer/television thingy.
I vote for 'Ann'. Then you can order 'Ann' around!
